The city where I was born – Araraquara – is located in the heart of the huge deep reddish soil area in South America known as Terra Roxa. In Portuguese the word roxa means means purple, but the Italian immigrants that arrived there at the beginning of 20th century called it rossa, red, and the Brazilians mistook it for roxa. Cari amici e amiche della danza,

a novembre prossimo parteciperò come insegnante e coreografa alla 13a. edizione della Divina Commedia Project™ che si terrà a Napoli. Città di poesia, passionale e sorprendente, amata e scongiurata dagli stessi italiani, accoglie rivoluzioni, accoglie la tomba di Virgilio (il primo luogo che visitai a Napoli la prima volta che sono venuta in Italia con i miei genitori!) e accoglie ora l’inusitato progetto di Francesca Pedretti dedicato a danzatori e danzatrici di Tribal Bellydance nelle sue svariate forme. Si tratta di un fine settimana di seminari con lo spettacolo finale; la selezione dei partecipanti viene fatta su pre-candidatura e la preparazione dei costumi, disegno luci e di qualche sequenza coreografica accade nei due mesi precedenti via internet; il resto è improvvisazione… 

Today, July 21st, is my twentieth anniversary of moving from Brazil to Italy. Once in Rome I became a professional bellydancer. Before I used to be a teacher, a translator, a writer… things like that. It’s been a big changing of focus, from the brain to the body work. However, I have so many good souvenirs, I’d say only wonderful memories of those hard times!

My new year has started in the Far East. I’m just back from a very interesting trip to Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou, China. Three totally different cities in which I could find something familiar all the time. 

In Hong Kong it was the cosmopolitan atmosphere to make things easy; in Macau it was the Portuguese heritage to make me feel home; in Guangzhou it was the the tribal bellydance community to warm my heart. 

How could this happen? 

Era il 29 giugno 2017. Si stava alla sala piccola del Teatro Brancaccio a Roma per la 14a. edizione del festival di fine anno del San Lo’. Abbiamo presentato, con un gruppo di sedici danzatrici, allieve dei miei corsi di tutti i livelli (principianti, intermedie e avanzate insieme) un lungo brano di danza in stile tribale ATS®. L’abbiamo chiamato “Ederlezi”, con l’idea di fare un omaggio alle origini gitane della nostra danza…
